About 320,000 people were killed here. One of the ways they exterminated people was by gassing them in a confined space. The prisoners were told they would take a short trip in a van to a villa. This villa was really a concentration camp. As the prisoners were transported in a van, gas was pumped into the van suffocating most of the prisoners. The prisoners who were not suffocated were killed as they exited the van. When Chelmno was attacked by the Americans, the guards tried to hide the evidence of all the people they had killed...
