ResentmentThe title of the piece I created is Resentment. The piece is about young Catholic birth mothers forced into adoption by their parents. It is based on the stimulus of oppression in society. There is a main oppressor and a main character who is oppressed, but every character is oppressed in some way. The piece is set in the present day but jumps from 1985 to the present day and England. I will compare my conceived piece to Bertolt Brecht's The Chalk Circle of the Caucasus. This comedy is set after World War II in a severely bombed Caucasian village. I will compare the themes and styles used by Brecht in the play with those used in the conceived play. I will also connect and compare the theme of oppression with “theatre of the oppressed”. This is a type of forum theater created by Boal. Forumtheatre is a form of interactive theater that transforms theater from the "monologue" of traditional representation into a "dialogue" between audience and stage. Forum Theater seeks to show a person (the oppressed) trying to confront oppression and failing due to resistance from one or more obstacles (the oppressor). My conceived piece is based on "theatre of the oppressed" but does not involve much interaction with the audience. The audience is not used in the piece at all, although a brief scene occurs in the audience. This is very different from Boal, as he tried to involve the audience as much as possible in the piece. In the Caucasian Chalk Circle there are many connections to the theme of oppression. Grusha is trapped because she knows it would be morally wrong to leave the child with the soldiers, but if she took him with her both their lives would be in danger. In this situation she is oppressed by society to do the morally right thing and by her own guilt because she would be able to live with herself if she left the child.
