The media is everywhere and for this reason we cannot escape the influence of the media. The media is one of the major external factors in our lifestyles that influences how we feel about people with disabilities. More recently, in the 2015 Melbourne Cup, the main race winner, Michelle Payne, had a brother, Steven Payne, who has Down syndrome. There was a lot of publicity focused on Steven Payne because he was the strapper, a heavy role that included feeding and grooming the horse. This caused a lot of positive publicity for people with Down syndrome because it demonstrated to society that people with intellectual disabilities can live the same life as an average person despite their disability.
