There are two different types of elephants; the African elephant and the Asian elephant (also known as the Indian elephant). The African elephant is the larger of the two. Measuring from the shoulder, African elephants average 10.8 feet (females 8.9 feet) and the average length of their trunk is about 7-8 feet. They have eyes the same size as humans, but they have no functioning tear glands, so they have a third eyelid to provide moisture.
