It is simply a form of poetry and personal narrative whose purpose is to create a moment that introduces vision, mood, or setting. One of his most visually arresting vignettes, or chapters, is called “Hairs.” Cisneros thinks deeply when describing each family's hair type, but best describes her mother's. “But my mother's hair, my mother's hair, small like rosettes, like candy circles, all curly and beautiful because she kept it in curls all day, sweet to stick your nose in…” (6). These panels have their moments to move the story forward when Esperanza has a flutter of emotion or thought.
