Topic > The Crucible by Arthur Miller - 994

Arthur Miller used the idea of the real witch trials of 1962 which took place in Salem in America and decided to use this kind of ideas to write the play titled “The Crucible ” and used a representation of McCarthyism, that is, the organization of witch hunts that began in 1938 in America and the hypothesis of witchcraft is still inspired by people and the public today. Arthur Miller demonstrates how people were easily accused and blamed for any reason and with little evidence had to be punished. Arthur Miller used a variety of dramatic devices such as sentence structure, interrupted speeches, short answers and even stage directions which give the audience an impression of the feelings and reactions in the atmosphere of the particular character. Arthur Miller shows a lot of dramatic situations especially in Act 3 where the situation involves most of the characters and also shows Abigail Williams' dramatic and exaggerated reaction to seeing the spirits as a way to blame other characters and get the attention of the judges but somehow the relationship between Elizabeth and Proctor will make the audience care about them as Miller used some amazing stage directions in that act. This also clarifies the tension that is building from Act 1 to Act 2, then in Act 3 the tension is out of control in the court which involves attracting the audience's interest. As the evidence for the witchcraft accusation increases as the act of Abigail William's frustrated reactions is more considered by the court, it suggests that the ending of the show will be dramatic. The tension increases when Mary Warren enters the courtroom scared and frightened and "continues with her eyes on the ground" this suggests that she is afraid... of the middle of the paper... of harm and of being left out. In conclusion, the end of the act mirrors the end of act 3. As Proctor says in the end of act 2 "the wind, the cold wind of God will blow". Proctor shows God's belief that there is still hope to save Elizabeth too to show that Abigail's acts were all an act and also shows anger towards Mary as she does not want to confess the truth This also shows Proctor's violence however at the end of act 3 Proctor says "a fire, a fire is burning" this shows that Proctor has lost faith in God even though he confessed that this didn't help prove that this whole witch hunt was all a sham, instead he managed to get him hung the next morning. This makes the audience feel and the reader lost and unfair. To conclude, in the times of the millers there was no way to fix it if you made a mistake and the next morning they hanged you like they did for Proctor.
