When Lysander speaks to Hermia in Act I, Scene I; he is both stating a truth about the mystery of love, foreshadowing the coming problems in the play. Aegeus demanded that his daughter obey him and marry Demetrius. Tension between the father and his daughter's chosen lover set the conflict in motion. Demetrius left with Theseus, Hippolyta and Egeus to discuss the marriage of the Duke of Athens. The young lovers Lysander and Hermia are left on stage and he tells her in lines 132-134: "For all that I ever could read, that I ever could hear from tale or history, the course of true love is never went smoothly." He says these words to comfort Hermia, but neither of them has any idea of the crazy night to come
