Topic > Child development, poverty and its effects on...

Poverty causes the deterioration of families and parental relationships, making it extremely difficult for parents to engage in parenting and provide for the basic needs of childhood. Parental stress affects a child's developmental process, and extreme stress can impair the neural pathways of the child's brain, which is underdeveloped (Kail, 2006). As a result, continuous learning, physical and mental health and learning problems emerge in the child's life. Studies say the prevalence of poverty is high in families with non-English residents, single parents and large families with high levels of illiteracy. All these are contributing factors to poverty that cause stress. This implies that children in these families are exposed to child development problems, but should not ensure that children raised in English families do not experience child development
