Topic > Malaysia's Rape Epidemic - 1117

IntroductionSexual crimes, especially rape, are on the rise these days. So much so that on some days this heinous crime is all you read about in the newspapers. A few weeks ago, much to the horror of the public, an incident came to light in which a ten-year-old girl was forced by the driver of her van in front of her friends and classmates. Unfortunately, it is not the first nor will it be the last case we will hear about and this proved to be true when two men were arrested two weeks ago for stalking and raping more than five teenage girls living in their neighborhood (Azizan 2010) . According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the number of reported rape cases nationwide increased from 1,217 cases in 2001 to 3,626 cases in 2009. This means that in less than a decade, the number of rape cases in Malaysia had almost tripled. This shows how this problem requires immediate action to prevent it from worsening further. Causes of RapeOne of the reasons why rape occurs is due to the presence of inequality between the sexes. All the years of men being treated as the dominant gender have led to the belief that they are more powerful than women. This is why, when changes occur in the status of women in society as equal to men, there is a power struggle to reaffirm the prevailing sex. The flawed justice system is another factor that contributes to the occurrence of rape. The ease with which rapists get off the hook with such low-level punishments imposed on them contributes to rapists believing they are untouchable. It is also difficult to prove rape in court even with the presence of modern technology (Nazlina Abd. Ghani). Beyond that, rape… middle of paper… is how most people currently live. : in constant fear. And unless this social problem is solved, this is how your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren will live. Don't subject your loved ones to this kind of fate, fix this problem before it becomes too late.Works CitedAbd. Ghani, N. 2014.
