Pretence is “the act of pretending, inventing, or imagining,” but in Suzanne Collin's book, The Hunger Games, pretense is simply a reflection of what is already happening in the world today (“ Fiction” ). Could this fictional novel, The Hunger Games, really be the future of America? Well, the book's main themes, such as inequality between rich and poor, suffering as entertainment, the importance of appearance, and government control, make the answer yes. First, the main comparison between the novel and our world today is the theme of inequality. between rich and poor. In The Hunger Games the gap between rich and poor is immense. The rich live in the city's capital, Panem, and the poor live in the twelve districts, so “the result is a huge disparity between their lives and those of the poor” (“The Hunger Games”). This lack of equality is revealed in many ways throughout the novel. The first example is food and hunger in district twelve, also known as “where you can starve safely” (6). Katniss and her family struggle to survive, forcing her to hunt illegally outside the district's electric fences. If it weren't for his hunting, his family would starve. Another example of inequality is the tile system and how tributes for games are chosen. The day of the harvest is when the tributes are chosen to participate in the Hunger Games. The idea is that the extraction of names is as correct as possible, but this is not true. In addition to the first entry of names, children will be able to enter them other times in exchange for extra rations of food and oil. Therefore, poor people are more likely to have more voices than wealthy families, due to… middle of paper… creative or imaginative art form? Or does he draw his ideas from today's world? In the case of Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games uses major themes to show the connection between fiction and reality. The real question is: are the odds always in your favor?
