INTRODUCTION Primary Health Care (PHC) Primary Health Care (PHC) is considered: • Highly effective • Low cost • Culturally appropriate and • Best way of providing quality health care (ewww.who.int/topics/primary_health_care/en/) These are the benefits that go to the community where primary health care is the way of providing health care. This is possible because primary healthcare places emphasis on: • Preventive medicine • Birth assistance • First aid • Distribution of basic medicines • Nutrition • Clean water • Sanitation and • Health education The main vehicle that makes advance primary health care are community health workers. These are community members (CHWs) who have undergone 6 to 9 months of intensive training and are supervised, undergo regular training and are able to manage 75% of all illnesses (diseases), health problems both of individuals and the community. The CHW's coverage area includes: • First aid for injuries • Immunization • Vaccination • Antibiotic provision • Oral rehydration therapy • Growth monitoring • Nutrition education/information • Micronutrient supplementation (vitamin A, iron) • Health maternal and infantile There is a referral procedure, in which the healthcare professional can refer seriously ill patients to the nearest healthcare facility.
