The United States of America is a multicultural nation. All races and cultures are almost represented in America. Considered as a nation of immigrants, this country has faced and continues to face many racial issues from the civil rights movement to the present. Racism and discrimination have always been the most discussed topics when it comes to societal problems. To understand this problem we should try to find the causes and then think of suitable ways to reduce them. What should the government do to ensure equal opportunities and also ensure equal outcomes, so that everyone has the freedom to do what they want, when they want, without being judged by the color of their skin but by the result of their work?“ Slavery it was a practice that existed in all cultures” (D'Souza, page 507). In Africa, for example, slaves were prisoners of war. They were used for work on farms and plantations. They were also used for human sacrifices. Many cultures practiced slavery around the world. People were taken away from their parents and their countries and sent abroad. Crevecoeur stated that: “Africans were torn from their friends and relatives when delivered into the hands of people of a different color” (Crevecoeur, page 475). The fact that slavery took a major turn in the United States was due to the fact that it was practiced by whites who sought free labor to develop the new nation and this involved millions of slaves. Slaves were mistreated and considered property. According to Spalding: “Slaves were regarded simply as property and in no way as people” (Spalding, page 463). Africans were used as slaves because they were strong and hard workers. They were sold and used for work without compensation to...... middle of paper ......help that: “The great ambition of democracy was precisely that of freeing the people from atavistic power through a discipline of principles that prohibited it” (Steele, page 496). The government should introduce a comprehensive racial equality policy. They should inform and educate the population about the laws through various campaigns and media advertisements. Cultural relativism should be promoted to help people understand that no race is superior or better than another. John Brittain believed that “racism will never end; therefore society must continue to study it and devise new strategies to combat it” (Brittain, page 505). Law enforcement officers should also receive specific training so that they know how to approach people and treat them equally. They also need to make sure that people respect the laws and that they themselves respect them.
