Simple or complex, large or small, projects fail due to multiple factors influencing them and the reasons could be many. Because each project is distinctive, has defined start and end dates, a limited budget and involves multiple stakeholders, it is difficult to avoid failure unless the right resources, methodologies and processes are in place. Key factors that could lead to project failure are unattainable requirements, unrealistic timelines, unqualified resources, poor communication, unreliable estimates, poor quality, poor governance and inadequate risk management. To avoid project failure it is very important that these influencing factors are managed appropriately with constructive planning and monitoring. Project managers have a significant responsibility towards the failure or success of a project as they are the reins that guide, plan and monitor the progress of the effort. There are numerous factors that attribute project failure. Lack of governance, inadequate level of supervision and lack of operational expertise are the reasons for the project's failure. Poor requirements that make clear the lack of purpose are the basis for project failure. Ambiguous, unclear, contradictory and unverifiable requirements lead to project failure. Unreliable, too tight, overly optimistic and unrealistic estimates and timelines are another significant reason that leads to project failure. Project stakeholders often try to estimate/calculate the duration of activities, costs and resources for a project based on their experience or previous projects instead of using appropriate estimating techniques suited to the project. The result leads to poor planning, increased risk and, in turn, project failure. Poor, ineffective… half paper… and poor project management practices. Furthermore, according to the article "The Role of the Project Manager in Improving Project Performance" by Abu Hassan Abu Bakar dated November 6, 2011, Project managers with effective project management techniques will ensure the overall success of project implementation within the constraints of costs, planning, quality in satisfying customer requirements. The source of project failures involves multiple stakeholders, ineffective processes, and ultimately, having the right people in the right places with effective and realistic governance would drive the project outcome to success. And an experienced project manager with effective project management provides a blueprint for the project outcome. Once the project has been defined and agreed, the project manager focuses on delivery by managing the project through effective methodologies to direct the result towards success.
