Investigating the origins of the Earth The creation of the universe, gods and humans is one of the most popular topics in myths. Many cultures have passed down creation stories orally and through writing so that we know them today. Creation stories were important information in helping humans understand and rationalize their place in life. Cris Campbell of Genealogy of Religion writes: “While there are undoubtedly other reasons, one of the most important is certainly orientation. People need to locate themselves in both time and space. Creation myths satisfy this need: they provide a temporal and spatial anchor. “The Babylonians were a people who ruled the world in ancient times. The Babylonian empire spanned what is now Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Türkiye, and Iran. The Babylonian creation account was recorded in the Enuma elish around 2500 BC (Rosenburg, 2). This epic of creation is a story of gods, family, and murder. The epic begins with the creation of some gods from fresh and salt waters. These gods (Anu and Ea) emerge from the waters and are very noisy causing their father in the fresh water (Apsu) to resent them. Despite mother Tiamat's objection, Apsu intends to kill her children. Ea learns of his impending doom and kills his father instead. Ea then has a son, Marduk, and plots to kill his mother because he thinks she let Apsu plan to kill Ea and Anu. Ea and Kingu attempt to kill Tiamat, but her monsters are too terrifying to overcome. Ea then brings her powerful son Marduk to fight and defeats Tiamat. He divides his body in two, creating the earth in one half, the sky in the other, and the clouds and rain in his saliva. All the gods celebrate and build Babylon, the home of the great...... middle of paper...... a flood sweeps the world and humans sacrifice a goat to the gods to earn their protection. African culture was clearly different, without much war or bloodshed needed to create the land and humans. However, humans were created from clay in both The Creation of the Titans and Gods, The Creation of the Universe, and Ife. In both stories, a god wanted to create god-like earthly companions. It is clear that the Yoruba people referred to the gods as intelligent and loving. It is clear that creation myths and epics are a very important part of human mythology and history. These stories were a way for people to relate to their past and the world around them. Every culture has a variation of the story, but ultimately humans are created and gods rule over them. Regardless of culture, humans have used myths and epics to understand creation.
