BullfightThe immediate reaction of many non-Spanish people to bullfighting is that it is a sick thing, a killing of animals, an immoral entertainment. For many others around the world, however, bullfighting is a sport that involves courage, skill and power, in a struggle between man and beast. The purpose of this article is not to discuss the morality of bullfighting, but to provide some insight into a sport loved by many around the world. A bullfight, or corrida de toros, consists of three matadors and six bouts, each taking about 20 minutes to complete. These fights take place in a bullfighting arena, or plaza de toros. The least experienced matador will fight the first and fourth matches, while the best matador will fight the third and last matches. Matadors are not alone. They are accompanied by three nererilleros and two picadores. The matador wears a brightly colored costume known as a suit of lights. His assistants wear less flashy costumes. The movement from one act to another in the bullfight is interrupted by a trumpet blast. The first trumpet signals the paseo, or the march of the bullfighters. The second trumpet announces the entrance of the bull. The matador first watches his main assistant perform a few passes with the yellow and magenta cape, to determine the qualities and mood of the bull, before taking control of himself. Two...
