Topic > Photograph: Analyzing Lesser, Mann, and More - 1102

Wendy Lesser's “Mulberry Street Café” portrays a young girl believably judging mature men located on all sides of her (Atwan 240). At Caffe Bella Napoli, an Italian-style restaurant, the girl represents the only teenager and woman in the photo. She has set herself up at one side of the bar and seems to be surveying all the activity happening in and around her. With his arm over his mouth as if he were biting his nails, he appears non-existent to the crowd. For example, she seems dejected and wonders, “Am I stuck here forever?” since she is the only female and young one around (Atwan 240). However, it is impossible to know what she really feels, but it can be agreed that she is analyzing the people around her based on her posture. Sally Mann, on the other hand, focused her camera on her daughter Jessie as she gracefully holds a sweet cigarette in her hand. In this shot, Jessie is the center of attention, while the young girl in the bar is a lone spectator. The selected works are divided into two types: spontaneous and scenic photography, spontaneous photography showing a real appearance and scenic photography portraying simulated appearances, both capturing the initial message the photographer intended. Both photos and characters contain comparable similarities and differences, and one can argue about the improvement a photographer can make to make their point more thoroughly. Staged photos diminish the originality of a photo while candid photographs do just the opposite. When no one controls the actions of the main subject, it is staged and the person photographed shows no true feelings about how they wish to be presented. Sally Mann's photograph seems more staged while her daughter l...... center of paper ......conceptions about a character in a photograph. That being the case, Mann and Lesser have both captured the characters of two young girls, similar and different in many ways. Ultimately, both are seen in their unique lifestyles, one exposed to a challenging world and the other exposed to its emptiness. Both photographers use different methods to develop a personality for their main subject, and it is difficult to fully recognize the true message intended for each photograph.
