Facebook is an online social networking site that has over 1 billion active users on a monthly basis. It is the largest and most active social networking site on the planet (Smith, 2013). According to Smith (2014), “Facebook is used by 57% of all American adults and 73% of all those ages 12 to 17.” Smith also states that 64% of users visit the site every day. The daily traffic of the site continues to grow and is reaching almost 500 million users per day and the frequency of usage for each individual member is also increasing. As excessive site usage becomes a common behavior, it comes with a negative impact on the mental and emotional health of its users. When positive emotions are generated in an attempt to satisfy the basic human need for social interaction, Facebook often does the opposite. it affects the quality of life and damages users' self-esteem. When using Facebook excessively and daily, users tend to have lower self-esteem than those who use it moderately or not at all. Recent studies show that Facebook use is directly associated with low self-esteem and depression. One study in particular conducted by psychology professor Ethan Kross in 2013 monitored 82 volunteers ranging in age from their late teens to early twenties. Volunteers agreed to track their Facebook activity as they reported their moods and feelings via text message and filled out questions. The study found that the amount of Facebook use was directly related to the mood states reported by the volunteers; the more they used Facebook, the worse they felt and the less they rated their self-worth.
