“Epidemiological studies comparing college and high school sports have consistently shown that football has the highest rates of concussions” (Neurotrauma. 2013). In a review of NFL football games, there were said to be 0.41 concussions per game; however, nearly half of all concussions go unreported, causing the overall estimated concussions per game to rise to nearly 1 concussion per professional game. (Neurotrauma. 2013) With this significant amount of concussions during professional games it is clear why there are so many discoveries of players after their careers with MCI. MCI is described as “an intermediate stage between the expected cognitive decline of normal aging and the more severe decline of dementia. It can involve problems with memory, language, thinking, and judgment that are greater than normal age-related changes (Dictionary.com 2016). Post-concussion protocol is now an important part of the world in both football and all other sports. It is said that "a 2005 meta-analysis suggested that athletes typically demonstrate complete neuropsychological recovery in 7-10 days after concussion", however, there have been recent studies showing "significant episodic memory impairments in adults of middle-aged and elderly people with a history of sports-related concussion” (Neurotrauma. 2013).
