Topic > Appalachian English and its influence on George Thorogood

Although this song is recognized as a George Thorogood song, it borrowed lyrics from songs by earlier musicians: “House-rent Blues” (1966) by John Lee Hooker and “One” by Amos Milburn Scotch, a bourbon, a beer” (1953) (Wikipedia). Thorogood is originally from the state of Delaware, and according to a 2003 dialect survey conducted by Harvard University's Department of Linguistics, residents of the state are not known to use the Appalachian dialect. However, Thorogood embraced the Appalachian dialect because of his love of Southern blues artists and their vernacular. In this essay I will analyze the differences between Standard American English and the Appalachian English used in the song. Lyrics: On the blues of renting a house I came home on a Friday and had to tell the landlady that I had lost my job. He said he won't console me, as long as I get my money next Friday. Now next Friday, come, I didn't get the rent, and I walked out the door. So I went to the landlady, said, "Did you let me get away?" the rent for you tomorrow. the next day I don't know So I said let me scroll it on know people> (Thorogood) The audio with the lyrics in the description can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97ECZMvbLxg*lyrics analyzed in this essay represents only 55 seconds of the transcription of the song*IPA: http://ipa.typeit.org/full/['wɑ.nɑ tɛl ju ə 'stɔ.ribɑʊ də 'hɑʊs. ɹɛn bluɑ kʌm hoʊm wʌn 'fɹɑ.deɪhæd tə tɛ də 'læn.leɪ.di ɑ dʌn lɔs mɑ dʒɑbʃi sɛ ðæt doʊn 'kʌm.fʊɹ milɔŋ æz ɛt mɑ 'mʌ.ni nɛks 'fɹɑ.deɪnɑ nɛks 'fɹa.deɪ kʌm ɑ dɪnt gɛt də rɛnɛn aʊt də dɔr ɑ wɛnsoʊ ɑ goʊz tu də 'læn.leɪ.diɑ sɛ ju 'lɛ.mi slaɪda hæv də rɛn foʊ jə tə.'mɑ.ɹədə nɛks de ɪ ɑ doʊ..... . half of paper ......like IPA phonetic symbols.
