Topic > Analysis of Saving Mr. Banks - 673

Saving Mr. Banks is a biographical comedy-drama about how Mary Poppins came to life on screen, exactly 50 years after the film Mary Poppins was released. Starring Tom Hanks, who took over the role from Walt Disney and who is the best man for the job. While Tom Hanks was very good, it's the amazing Emma Thompson who catches your attention the most. She plays the reserved Pamela “PL” Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. A film directed by John Lee Hancock who also directed The Blind Side. The film begins in London in 1961 in Mrs Travers' house. The beginning can be quite difficult to understand if you don't know what the film is about. She's on the phone talking about a "he" and a "she." Once you know who he's talking to, it's easier to understand. The "he" is Walt Disney and the "she" is Mary Poppins. Walt Disney wants to make a film about Mary Poppins. The one thing Ms. Travers doesn't want is to see her book turned into a "silly cartoon," as she calls it. She has held the offer for a good 20 years now. Due to financial problems her agent is trying to convince her to accept the offer. Throughout this time Mrs. Travers presents herself as a very cold person without many friends or family. After promising Mrs. Travers that they will only work with real actors and no cartoons, Walt Disney convinces her after all, come to Hollywood to consider giving up the film rights. Mrs Travers is afraid of going to Hollywood and has no intention of giving up the rights to her Mary Poppins book series. She is very protective of the character. From that moment on the flashbacks to his childhood begin. The transition from the 1961 scenes to the 1906 scenes is very good. Mrs Tra... middle of paper... the film was very engaging, informative and very enjoyable to watch. It could have been a very boring movie but it wasn't. Especially when you've already seen Mary Poppins. The film was very well written. At first you could have the feeling that it would get boring very easily, but after a while you get sucked into the story. The more you know the character, the more interesting he becomes. It's definitely a movie worth watching. Watching a film without Dutch subtitles was something I had never done before. I regularly download films or series and watch them without Dutch subtitles. With some films it is more difficult than with others. This wasn't such a difficult movie to understand. There were no strong accents or really difficult words. I found it to be a fun assignment to do, but I found 2 pages of text a little too long for a review.
