Topic > Exploring Academic Writing in My Discipline - 1059

Section 1: Course WritingThe major categories of writing in my field of research are presentation, research paper, article review, scholarship application letter, and a book. These categorized literatures include many subcategories: The writing style changes based on the audience. When a researcher presents his findings to the general public, he will change his writing style based on his knowledge and familiarity with the topic. Furthermore, we can find similar practices in other types of writings, except research papers. In general, research articles are written for submission to journals, so their writing style should be specialized for those with general interests and knowledge in the field, and precise in their terminology. Therefore, the writing assignments required for my classes were often organized to acquire the background knowledge required in the field, reasonable writing flow, and fluency in terminology. The practical writing assignments in the courses I am currently taking and will do in the future are as follows: in the Fisheries Science course (Zool466), I am required to write a research paper on the ecology of species, the history of fisheries, trends in fisheries and the situation in the past, present and potential future management of fisheries. This assignment is designed to improve my ability to become familiar with a particular fishing industry, sharpen my research and writing skills, and apply concepts and frameworks developed in class to solve real-world situations in the fishing industry (handout from guide Zool466 lesson, SPRING 2010). In another course, Political Geography of the Oceans (GEOG435), I am required to give a presentation twice during the semester that will familiarize me with and... half of the paper... general characteristics of species, etc. Then, they examine the topic with in-depth and more detailed information, possibly from current literature on the topic. Next, they designate the problem and controversial issues. In conclusion, they state expectations for resolving the problem and improving the discussion. Discussion articles are similar in composition to Review articles, except that you don't need to summarize the entire topic. Furthermore, these types of articles tend to be convenient for expressing the author's point of view due to his subjective writing style. However, these types of documents have offered great opportunities to improve communication between researchers. You can understand what the "hot" topics are in the field of research by reading excellent opinions on the topic from various researchers and contradictions in the articles of other scientists.
