The book begins with Katniss Everdeen, the main protagonist, explaining her life in the district ruled by the Capitol. The poor neighborhood basically belongs to the coal miners who supply their goods to the Capitol for a living. Due to the death of Gale and Katniss' father in their early years, the two best friends hunt wild animals in the woods and sell them illegally. Katniss is a young girl who lives with her mother and sister. The story progresses steadily until the day of harvest approaches. As punishment, and a reminder of the Capitol's power, each district must give up one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. They are chosen through the harvest held in each of the twelve districts. The dark atmosphere pervades the setting when the young Primrose Everdeen is chosen for the 74th Hunger Games.
