Every day we lie, torment, cheat, persecute, degrade, judge, kill, starve, and envy not only our fellow Americans, but we do these things to man sitting right next to us, but “In God We Trust,” right? Wrong! How can we claim to be a Christian nation when we have gone through hundreds of years of religious rights violations, when we have people who are in desperate need but no one as a whole cares enough about them, and when African-American species is in danger . The basis for which the pilgrims left Europe and came to America was religious freedom! Multiple different religions in our “God-fearing” nation have been excluded or rejected simply because of their right to believe in a higher being. In saying this, it must be safely assumed that religious freedom was NOT the only reason why ever since the dust settled from Europe to the “West Indies” our ancestors began telling different religious sects what they could and could not do to worship their omnipresent deity. Even though the Pilgrims arrived filled with the hatred that religious oppressions had brought them, one of their goals was to convert the Native Americans to Christianity! As our colonies became a unified nation, we began to pass laws that varied religions from their normal worship rituals. Henry Louis Mencken said, “Giving every man a vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.” (Leray, 2014) Thomas Jeffereson said, “I will never, by any word or deed, bow to the sanctuary of intolerance nor admit the right of inquiry into the religious opinions of others.” (Petrie, 2014) These two quotes point out that even though we, the people, "one nation under God", are completely separate... middle of paper... ourselves and could care even less if the next man lives or dies! We claim to be religious or Christian in falsifying promises, but continually limit those promises because of race, gender, sexual preference, and religion!
