Topic > The Influence of the Media on the Murder of JonBenet Ramsey - 1609

Sue Grafton once stated: “Except for cases clearly involving a homicidal maniac, the police like to believe that murders are committed by those we know and we love, and most of the time you're right." This is clearly the thinking that the Boulder Colorado police conceived in the case of little beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey. As many have observed from the onslaught of media coverage, the day after the Christmas 1996, six-year-old Jon Benet Ramsey was found buried under a white blanket, bound, beaten and strangled to death in the basement of their home in Boulder. Such an extraordinarily rare and fascinating story of the death of a beauty queen six-year-old, who was part of a "perfect upper-middle-class American family," combined with the lack of a lead and the growing suspicion building against his parents, it was no surprise to find that he was fuel for the media and soon the stories were sold and became a source of competition among the press. Then, like wildfire, this heartbreaking story spread, stretching across the nation, shattering the souls of the world. News reports, magazine and newspaper articles, and television specials have all shaped people's perceptions of the murder of this beautiful little girl, especially her parents, the involvement or lack thereof of John and Pasty Ramsey. The police and FBI's ruthless quest to link Jon Benet's murder to his parents seemed to cause them to overlook important evidence, or at least dismiss suspicious findings that would otherwise have sent alarm bells ringing to investigators. There are many contributors to why this case remains unsolved, including lack of investigative experience, failure to protect valuable evidence, and excessive focus on parents as suspects but, ultimately, excessive involvement of... half of the paper. .....ary n.page Network.
