Topic > Importance of Identity - 980

Identity is the way an individual is perceived and shows his individuality or association with a group. It can be defined as the unique attribute that belongs to any individual or is shared by people who belong to a specific social or ethnic group. People form their identities by identifying with people who are important to you such as your parents or siblings. Furthermore, individuals might form their identity based on their beliefs or values. Identity is influenced by various things and has changed a lot over time, space and situation. Furthermore, race/ethnicity, gender, and disability are of great importance to identity formation. We all know that identity is constructed and rational. Identity construction involves right or wrong, tainted or pristine, attractive or unattractive, and so on. These rules are subject to change even if they appear fixed. People's identities are constructed based on gender, race, caste, social class, sexuality, etc. For example, if a person walks down the street wearing a very revealing dress and excessive makeup, the person may be identified by other people. as unkempt or slutty. Identity is subject to change over time. Let's consider a person of low social class and therefore identified as poor. If in the future the person makes it and becomes important, the individual's identity changes from poor to rich. Furthermore, if a person has been gay for almost his entire life and then, after a long period of time, decides to become heterosexual, the person's identity will change from homosexual to hetrosexual. The Calabar tribe of Nigeria for a long period of time has always been identified as murderous twins. But after many years of their k...... middle of paper ......ty of a person because there are fixed identities of an individual with disabilities. A person with a disability might identify with people who have the same disability because he feels he shares something with them and feels similar. But a person with a disability may not identify with people who don't have disabilities because they may feel out of place. However, a person with one or more disabilities could be identified by society as having a handicap, which constitutes a form of discrimination because this makes the person feel disadvantaged not only because of their disability, but because of culturally, economically constructed obstacles and socially. In conclusion, identity is what makes a person unique and creates who you are. Without it, an individual would have lost what distinguishes him from every other person and what makes him who he is.
