Should ex-convicts get a second chance? This is a common topic talked about all over the world. There are many people who have made mistakes, especially when they were young, and why shouldn't it be in everyone's interest to help them redeem themselves and then get on the right path. Many of those released from prison fear that they will fail before release into society with only the minimum basic education allowed while incarcerated. According to Wheeler & Patterson (2008) “Problems reintegrating into communities, including substance abuse; mental illness; HIV and AIDS; lack of education; unemployment; homeless; legal obstacles to the use of public services, such as the prohibition on obtaining public assistance; restrictions on public housing and limited transitional housing options” (p.145). However, when ex-offenders are not given equal opportunities for employment and advancement, they usually fall back into the cycle of crime and incarceration. Things like theft and drug abuse are caused by the social, financial and physical effects of poverty or poor financial situation. In some cases, inmates have little or no money saved, but in other cases, the ex-inmate is in a tough situation. good status with money saved but somehow he ended up in jail, he will also end up poor because he will soon run out of his money due to lack of income. In both cases, by not giving ex-prisoners equal opportunities in terms of employment, they will end up having no income to improve their financial situation. This will force ex-prisoners to find other methods to survive and support their families. Often, their old ways lead them to return to criminal activity when other doors are closed. No matter how tempting it is, tr...... middle of paper ......contributor to the community and society. Giving a second chance to improve on past mistakes and wrong actions should be something to appreciate. It's a blessing because you have the chance to redo everything in the right direction. Take responsibility for your actions and change for the better. People should take advantage of it just like Malcolm X did when he gave second chances. He studied in prison to become a better person. So many successful personals have been given a second chance and corrected their previous mistakes. I have gaps in my knowledge of the topic and looking at multiple sources can broaden my view of the topic. Instead of thinking opinionatedly, I should use more facts and other people's points of view in this topic. This will make my argument more efficient and effective in convincing others to understand my point.
