In "Where You Come From, Where Have You Been" by Joyce Carol Oates Connie daydreams that Arnold Friend and Ellie come to her house to illustrate the theme of temptation and desire what you cannot have. Throughout the story, it is possible to determine when Connie is dreaming by the qualities of the people and things around her and how she perceives the world at that moment. There are several indications that the moment of Friend Arnold's arrival signifies the beginning of Connie's daydream. For example, the sensations Connie felt when she first met Arnold were that she "shrugged her shoulders and breathed in with the pure pleasure of being alive" (Joyce Carol Oates, Page 1), which were the same sensations she felt while masturbating alone in the house when Arnold arrives (Page 2). Similar connections can be made to Arnold being aware of all the things Connie knows in his mind.
