Topic > Death, personal and supernatural experience in...

These five poems by Sylvia Plath are all connected by the theme of death, self-loathing and the presence of historical and magical concepts. Sylvia Plath uses very powerful images of controversial and emotional topics to best describe her life. Most of the poems reflect his personal life, including the events he experienced and, more appropriately, the relationships and emotions he felt. Each of these five poems uses the word “dead” and the theme of death itself is somewhat prevalent. Of particular interest is the presence of his relationship with his deceased father and his own reluctance to let go of his memory. Plath's poetry reflects her self-loathing and contempt for her own existence. His poems often mention his suicide attempts, as well as his personal experiences in trying to rid himself of his suicidal desires. In each of his poems he evokes images of historical and mythical creatures and concepts related to the religious and the supernatural. Furthermore, his poems can be linked by the idea of being held or held back by some kind of feeling, whether longing for a loved one, escape from mortal existence, or a fantasy world. In the poem "The Colossus", Plath is reflecting on her relationship with her father. It depicts him as a sort of giant statue that has broken into pieces that, despite his efforts, he will never be able to put back together. This poem reflects his inability to let go of his father despite him being dead for most of his life; he was thirty years old at the time. In one particular verse, he says: “Thirty years now I have worked / To dredge the silt from your throat. / I am none the wiser." (Plath 48-49) The t...... middle of paper.......Plath, Sylvia.
