Even after the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade Wade in 1973, Texas found a way to implement very strict guidelines for abortion clinics and their patients. Senate Bill 5 was the predecessor to House Bill 2 that Senator Wendy Davis filibustered on June 23, 2013. Wendy Davis plays a huge role in the fight for women's abortion rights. In the book Forgotten to Be Afraid, Wendy Davis reveals that she had several miscarriages and that it was not an easy thing to do. He also goes into detail about both of his firings. The first happened in 1994 when Wendy Davis discovered she had an ectopic pregnancy (an egg attaches to the outside of the uterus). This type of pregnancy is very dangerous for the mother, hence the abortion. The other miscarriage occurred in 1996, when Ms. Davis underwent an ultrasound and discovered that the baby would have serious complications. Her doctor determined that the fetus's brain had not developed properly. The doctor also stated that if the baby made it through the holidays, his doctor wasn't even sure if the baby would make it through the birth. A few weeks after the filibuster, the House held a special session to introduce another bill called House Bill 2. HB2 placed more restrictions on abortion clinics. New bill requires abortion clinics to operate under the same guidelines as outpatient surgery centers in order to perform abortions.
