The leader's function is to continually evaluate and adapt his or her behavior to each follower's ability and enthusiasm to complete the assigned work. For example, when a follower has less experience, it is the leader's responsibility to train him or her properly and show the follower how the work should be completed. When an associate is experienced, they don't need as much supervision or support to get the job done. For example, it would be better to assign the work to the follower. Although instinctively fascinating, researchers have not experimented with or paid any attention to situational leadership theory (Hersey & Blanchard, 2010). However, the findings support the theory's claim that subordinates benefit from mandated action, but more experimental testing of the remaining claims is warranted (Hersey & Blanchard, 2012).
