When he graduated he demonstrated that he would rather be recognized for supporting the ideals of white men than share his personal beliefs. Throughout the progression of Battle Royale, exposed to the same white people from whom he seeks recognition, he is shown how little his upbringing meant to them. While in the ring, he hears, "I put my money on the big guy," making him ask, "Should I try to win against the rumors out there? Wouldn't that go against my point, and wouldn't this be a moment of humility, of non-resistance?” (394), confusing him as to whether he should fight for his dignity or for white values. Having this contradiction, the character grows, understanding how he finds himself in a system that will always treat him differently than the majority a similar problem and thinks he is fighting against the pressure of the white crowd, especially a man, in contrast to his previous dilemma, he does not question that he is a traitor to the “Big Shots”, but instead emphasizes “a huge idea. which [he] actually found himself accomplishing” (396), demonstrating a change in ideals.
