These objectives must be “SMART”. SMART goals is a term used by George Doran in an article titled “There is a SMART way to write management goals and objectives. This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Aggressive, Realistic, Time-bound (Doran, 35-36). If a manager assigns a task to an employee, but it does not meet the “SMART” requirements, there is a strong possibility that the employee will not be able to achieve that goal efficiently. The manager must ensure that the objective is specific. If the goal is not clearly stated or if it is misunderstood by the employee, it may not be achieved. The objective must also be measurable. There must be a way for the employee to show progress with the task at hand, it is difficult to complete a task if there is no tangible way to know if the goal has been completed. The goal must be achievable for the individual. The employee must have the right resources and knowledge to carry out the task. This correlates to the realistic aspect of SMART goals. If the assigned task is unrealistic, the employee may feel frustrated when he or she fails to achieve the goal. Finally, the manager should assign the employee a period of time to complete the task, this will motivate the employee to complete the task at the highest level of efficiency
