The story of a film is told by the sequence of events. Films convey a story to the viewer differently than a novel. This is done by showing, telling and explaining by Gunning (1949). Editing is a very important feature to join one event to another in a film. Filmmakers take part in many editing operations as they have to do so for special effects, as explained by Gunning (1949). As for example in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) extensive use of editing is made. This is evident in the film when, towards the end, the battle between Harry and the villains takes place. Sequences of events are spliced together to show what is happening to each of Harry's friends. Montage is useful for showing flashback events, this is shown in the film when Harry has a flashback. At one point Harry is lying on the floor and a second later there is a flashback. There is a repeat of the flashbacks and then Harry is seen lying on the floor again. This is a narrative device used by films that cannot be used by the novelist in novels. However, there are some rules that filmmakers must take into account when editing. One of these is the 180 degree rule illustrated by Proferes (2008). He said the 180 degree rule ensures that there is a consistent direction on the screen between a character and an object within the established space. This makes it possible for the story to continue in a movie, some scenes are established through this rule and it helps the director to create scenes that do not confuse the viewers. Cutting image and Cutting audio are another way of editing a film that is able to cut some parts of the film without the viewer realizing it. In most cases this type of editing is done when the film is shown...... in the center of the card...... low angle shot when the camera is pointed at Lord Voldemort since he is the powerful one in that point and Harry is made to look small. These story lines are explained through the use of fricative language while in the film. The use of diestic and non-diestic sounds illustrates Harry's fear. Symbols such as sweat and facial expressions are used to show how scared he is and that he is having a bad dream. The story is explained through visual information in minutes. Overall I think a movie is a much better way to tell a story as it shows the important parts of the story through visual information. However, novels are a very complex form of telling a story. It goes into great detail, sometimes with unnecessary information. The narrative devices used by both the film and the novel are effective in adapting to each typology since many people still read books today.
