Every gallon of gasoline saved was important to the war effort on both sides. Germany has taken advantage of the use of electric vehicles and promoted their use by making them tax-free. They had over 27,000 electric vehicles in service. In England, some realized that if electric vehicles could replace even more petrol-powered cars in transporting everyday items, it could free up liters of petrol every year that could be earmarked for military needs. Air pollution from petrol engines was beginning to cause concern, and numerous small businesses were created to try to meet what appeared to be new demand. Most of the vehicles produced were conversions of mass-produced conventional automobiles.
