In this discussion I will explain my Health Care Acquired Infections (HAI) teaching plan and the assessment methods I have chosen to use in presenting this information. Healthcare-acquired infections can be financially, emotionally and physically devastating for the patient, family members and healthcare workers. The audience for my teaching plan is clients and their families in the critical care setting. The purpose of my teaching plan is to provide this vulnerable group of individuals with the information needed to prevent HAIs. This topic is serious and is important in my daily duties as a nurse. My ultimate goal is to do a research study on this topic in the future. Landers, Abusalem, Coty, and Bingham (2012), show that patients' hands are full of pathogens after just a few days of hospitalization. These pathogens are exposing patients and their families to the risk of HAI. Education is essential to prevent and reduce risk factors for the onset of HAIs. My first goal for the teaching plan is to get clients and their families familiar with HAIs. Within this objective is to define HAIs, their risk factors and three ways to prevent them. The method to achieve this is individual education using illustrated graphics to show what a HAI is, its risk factors, and how to reduce them. This teaching allows the client and his family to recognize areas that need to be adjusted during the hospital stay. This will help the client and their family members prevent a HAI while they are most vulnerable. The evaluation method that will be used is a posttest. If students are aware that they need to complete a posttest, this requirement encourages them to pay attention to the information (Bastable, 2008, p. 495). In a 10...... half of the paper ......t hand hygiene and the prevention of HAIs. The evaluation method to be used is that of question and answer. This would provide a back and forth dialogue between the educator and the student. This will allow the client and their family members to express any concerns they may have. By using these four goals in my HAI teaching plan, I hope to provide patients and their families in an acute care setting with the information and motivation needed to help them gain the ability to prevent HAIs.
