Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that negatively affects the entire body. It has been around for over forty years and is progressively becoming more and more common, especially in the United States. However, it is treatable and can be resolved with medical and psychological help. Looking for signs and symptoms is the first thing to look for when trying to help someone with anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa was discovered in 1964 by Dr. Richard Martan. It was considered a rare disease until about 30 years ago. It is becoming more common especially in Western countries due to cultural pressure to maintain an optimal weight or under optimal weight. Anorexia nervosa is a psychological disorder characterized by the somatic delusion of being too fat despite being emaciated (). It's a type of eating disorder. It starts with the diet to lose weight. So, it becomes this drive to lose weight and be afraid of being fat. It ultimately turns out to be more than an obsession with weight, but more than an addiction. 3.7% of females and 0.3% of males will become anorexic at some point in their lives (). Anorexia is seen in middle and upper class people, ages 9 through high school and then less seen but still present in adults over 30. It is more common in older age to see anorexia in celebrities. Culture is important to almost everyone; however, in the United States there is constant pressure to fit a certain beauty ideal. Being flawless, thin and almost perfect is what many women want to be.
