Many times while reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could happen because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character's perspective and their emotions and this in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is most intriguing to me and the one I found when comparing her to every book I read in school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” Lee Maracle. Stacey's character goes through many internal battles with herself and is on her road to discovery as she begins to understand herself and what she is capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has some issues that she tries to work through. This is emphasized in his village and his school which is located across the bridge in the White City. Stacey begins to deal with the loss of Nora and an old woman from her town. And this in return begins the chain of events that Stacey begins on the path to self-discovery not only about herself but everyone around her. He begins to see things differently and clearly. Stacey is a very complex and confusing character, and she begins to work through these complexities through her thoughts, statements, and actions. Stacey goes through a lot of growth as a character, and most of it comes through her daily experiences and internal thoughts and battles with herself. Stacey deals with most of her problems with silence and rarely approaches anyone to communicate her feelings. These feelings and confusion begin to emerge early on at Nora's funeral. Stacey looks at her village, the people who live there and the way they are dressed and compares it to the funeral she attended when her friend... middle of paper... what more is she capable of than she herself knows and that there is still a great future for her and for the village. Stacey is the beacon of her city that shows the potential for change and the bridge that symbolizes the separation between these two places. Stacey crosses this bridge every day and in that ending a lot is left unsaid about what might happen. Stacey has been a challenging character to explore, as her identity continues to confuse her, and in her discoveries, the reader slowly begins to understand her and why she struggles so much and her frustrations. In return, readers can almost understand his pain because of this and the journey he had to take that didn't lead to realizing his dreams because of the separation that the village and town were so focused on.
