Marijuana was used as early as 8,000 BC as hemp rope in what is now modern Taiwan. The seeds were used as hemp oil in China during the BC period. The first recorded person to ever use marijuana was Emperor Shen Neng of China in 2,737 BC and he used it for medicinal purposes. Shortly thereafter, cannabis was cultivated for food use and for the production of fibers such as hemp fabric and rope. Between 2000 BC and 570, cannabis use spread to Russia, present-day Kazakhstan, Persia, England, and European countries such as Greece.
