People are living longer due to a shift in the mortality rate of diseases that were previously responsible for a higher incidence of death. An increase in research and technology in medicine has reduced the mortality rate among the elderly, increasing the aging of the population. As noted by Halaweish and Alam (2015), the incidence of Alzheimer's disease as a cause of death is steadily increasing as the number of older adults increases. This statistic indicates the need for healthcare sector preparedness in terms of end-of-life care capacity. Emphasis reflecting trends in healthcare should focus on Alzheimer's awareness, home healthcare and long-term care facilities. As individuals begin to live longer and experience increases in healthcare technology, the prevalence of chronic diseases increases. Inclination of chronic diseases and comorbidities increases medical expenses. The increasing rate of older adults with chronic diseases may increase the incidence of older adults with disabilities. This increase in disability resulting from chronic disease will require an emphasis on long-term care options for older adults
