A Mississippi man with a drug-related criminal record was sentenced to 100 years for a drug crime. An African-American man was given an outrageous sentence for selling cocaine, fleeing from police and violating his probation. This man was sentenced based on the maximum guidelines and not based on the severity of the crime. Most likely the profits of a street drug dealer were nowhere near Madoff's 13 billion. In fact, according to the article, punishment for drug crimes beats that for murder, in US news, Venkatesh claimed that "ninety-five percent of drug dealers work for less than minimum wage." The purpose of having trials, convicting and sentencing criminals is to have justice; Justice for individuals and families who have been affected by the crimes committed by others. So giving a much longer sentence to a drug dealer is certainly not serving time
