Have you ever heard of the FedEx company? Imagine if they had horses and ships instead of cars and planes. They also had their own army and covered much of the world. This is the British East India Company. The company was super powerful in several ways. Their connection with Brittany gave them a monopoly on trade and their armies enabled them to control their own lands. The British East India Tea Company helped start the Revolutionary War. The British East India Tea Company was originally called "The Governor and Company of London Merchants Trading in the East Indies". They obviously intended to trade with the East Indies, but they traded with many other places including China and the Indian subcontinent. They mainly trade common items such as wool, silk, dyes and salts. However, they were best known for the tea trade. Almost anyone who has heard of the East India Company will think of the tea they traded. Another key point, the company received a royal charter, or a document granting rights or powers, from Queen Elizabeth on December 31, 1600. This meant that the company was officially part of the same team as Brittan. The company was also a joint stock company, meaning they sold shares in their company to other people. Additionally, the company used its private army to rule India. In this way, the East India Company managed to start several wars. Around 1770, it became clear that the East India Company could not control and govern its gigantic lands. He began losing huge amounts of money paying for various things they used as a business. At the same time, the tax on tea did not help. Taxes made tea too expensive. Eventually the company got help from parliament. On May 10, 1773, the Tea Act was drafted... mid-paper... which didn't please the colonists at the time since the colonists didn't like Catholics praying on their borders. The coercive acts were later called the Intolerable Acts because the colonists could not tolerate them. Thus, the East India Company ended up angering both the colonists and parliament. Each of them fought back, through the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts. The East India Company unintentionally crossed the line and started the Revolutionary War by selling tea. And then the Revolutionary War began. Ultimately, it was clear that a major cause of the Revolutionary War was the British East India Company. The company was one of the largest trading companies to ever exist. It was one of the most powerful groups in existence at the time. And, even if unintentionally, the company created the United States, an entire country.
