Billions of people use social media every day. From Facebook to Twitter, to LinkedIn and Tumblr. It's everywhere! Social media is in classrooms, offices and homes. It's something everyone uses. There are positive things that come from social networks, as well as negative things. By using social media, information travels faster, law enforcement can catch and arrest criminals, it's good for the economy, and colleges and universities use social networks to recruit and retain students. The use of social media, however, can harm students' chances of getting into university, users are vulnerable to hacking and identity theft, and they are a source of cyberbullying. Information travels faster now than it did fifty years ago. Fifty years ago, people could rely on news broadcasts and radio broadcasts for their daily news. One thing we have now that they didn't have is the Internet. Technology is evolving, and with that, we receive news and information at a dizzying pace. You can watch CNN or listen to the radio and get the news that way, or you can go to Facebook or Twitter, scroll down a little bit and there's the information that was about to deliver. 50% of people say they learn the latest news on social media rather than on television or radio broadcasts. Now, social media not only spreads information on news-related topics, but also spreads different types of information. You can log in and see the release date of your favorite artist's new album, when your favorite show is airing, or what horror movie is next in theaters. All kinds of information is being sent out on social media faster than ever. Believe it or not, but law enforcement uses social media quite a bit. 67% of federal, state and local findings......halfway through the document ......demonstrate that men and women are at the same risk of becoming victims of cyberbullying. Facebook is the main source compared to other social networks. 54%, more than half of those interviewed, said they had been the victim of cyberbullying at least once on Facebook. Cyberbullying affects the social life and self-esteem of 70% of victims. Social media and networks are a great thing to have. With social media and networking, news travels faster, law enforcement can catch criminals faster, it helps the economy, and colleges and universities can recruit new students and retain current ones. While there are so many positives about social media and networking, there are also negatives. A person can be rejected from a college or university because of something inappropriate you posted, a person can be hacked or even become a victim of cyberbullying.
