That being the case, he admitted that he had no hatred for the man. Orwell survived the deception of Hitler's manipulative rise to power and hypnotic control, and felt he had to warn ordinary people of any possible similar situation. While Orwell was writing "Nineteen Eighty-Four," he was not in great physical or mental condition, another writer observed. "Orwell's health was poor; then, his wife also died in 1945. Orwell was ill and gloomy; in 1947 he retired to a small farm on a distant and lonely island in the Hebrides, and isolated himself from society. The facts of course they predisposed him to look at public events with bitterness (Kateb, 574)." Orwell's weakness could be an explanation for the severity of the situation within "Nineteen Eighty-Four", as he was vulnerable and probably wrote for a cause. Because of his intimidation over recent events in Germany, the war, and the possibility of Nazism taking control, Orwell wrote "Nineteen Eighty-Four" full of fear.
