The four professional traits I bring to an interdisciplinary team in a healthcare setting include respect, compassion, commitment, and responsibility. These four qualities help define a nurse as not just a good nurse but a great nurse. Respect is a very important characteristic for a nursing professional to exhibit. Respect is a feeling of admiration for someone or something that is good, valuable, or important. Respect should be shown for patients, families and colleagues. I treat others as I expect to be treated, every person a nurse comes into contact with deserves to be respected. Compassion is the response to the suffering of others that motivates the desire to help. Compassion is the act of going out of your way to help another's physical, spiritual, or emotional hurt or pain. Compassion goes hand in hand with respect. Every person a nurse contacts should be and deserves to have compassion. Commitment is another outstanding professional characteristic that every nurse should bring to the profession. Provision 2:1 of the Code of Ethics states that the nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, a family, a group or a community. I strive every day to provide exceptional care to patients and their families in every encounter with the care I provide. The final essential characteristic of nursing that I bring to my career is accountability.
