Hemingway describes a train station with “two lines of rails in the sun” (Hemingway, 114). This indicates that one side of the track will lead to a particular destination in life and the other side will have a very different outcome. On one side of the railway, the landscape is lush, fertile and full of life. On the other side of the railway there are hills without trees or shade and they seem lifeless. This symbolizes very well the outcome of the decision to have an abortion or not. One choice leads to fertility and having a child and the other choice would lead to a barren and empty womb. The symbolism of the scenario goes hand in hand with the decision the couple must make. The two tracks in opposite directions will lead to two different places. Regardless of which side is chosen, the couple will have to deal with the consequences of their own
