Cindy ShermanTerror and mockery merge in the portraits of Cindy Sherman exhibited at the Crocker Art Museum. Upon entering the large, dimly lit ballroom, one may begin to feel a slight sense of trepidation as the viewer looks around and finds nine pairs of beady eyes watching every move. Sherman created his historical portraits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, nine of which are on display at the museum. In her portraits she uses lush fabrics, lavish jewelry, and fake body parts to decorate herself in these self-portraits. His portraits are known to cause discomfort in viewers who find the general stereotypes, depicted in his portraits, amusing, but at the same time confusing and terrifying. Sherman's Untitled #225 (Blond Woman) triggers those very emotions. The portrait is a large color photograph created in 1990. A young blond, Madonna-like 18th century woman sits poised with one hand on her exposed artificial breast as if breastfeeding a baby. She is well dressed in a blue satin dress, small white beads woven into her braided hair, and a tiara on top of her head. His icy blue eyes stare to the left with a hard, cold expression. With her breasts pointing upwards, spitting fluids, in the same direction she is looking, it is difficult to imagine what is going through her mind, however it is clear that it is something of an almost vengeful and merciless nature. Maybe she points her breast at a man who has cheated on her or molested her...
