He made her smile and they laughed together. Then, once Joe became mayor of Eatonville, Janie and Joe's relationship started to go down the wrong path. Joe began to control Janie just like Logan did. He made her work and maintained the shop. It stopped her from being herself and doing what she wanted. Joe made her stay in the shop and not participate in the town's activities. Janie kept to herself and held back about who she really was and what she wanted to do. Joe beat Janie, put her down, humiliated her, and monitored her every move. Janie could hardly think of herself in that relationship, but she never stopped caring for Joe. Janie loved Joe until his death
