Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act The unhealthy food trend in the United States is alarming: 1 in 3 children is obese or overweight. In the USA there is a lack of culture when it comes to food; our food culture is essentially characterized by too much sugar, fat and salt without enough fruit, vegetables and whole grains. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act has all the right principles for providing nutritious meals for students, but yet we are seeing turmoil among our youth and I'm curious to find out why. As a future parent wanting the best for my children, I want to see a passionate movement to continue improving school lunch programs. I now have two dogs and have spent countless hours researching dog food, the source of dog food itself, and the best formula for my dogs to maintain their optimal health. I came across the idea of feeding them raw meals. Every Sunday, once a month, I pick up some butcher's mix at the local meat market and prepare food for the following weeks. It takes time, but it's worth it because I know exactly what ingredients I'm getting. Personally, I was never raised with the best eating habits and now, as an adult, I am attempting to overhaul my eating habits. Hopefully, when the time comes to start a family, I will have gained more knowledge and will be able to plan nutritious meals and snacks each day for our family to support healthy bodies and minds. As the obesity crisis in the United States has been spreading in recent years, First Lady Michelle Obama has focused on this epidemic. “The opportunity to rewrite and then regulate the law authorizing the school lunch program was the perfect vehicle to bring the first lady's healthy eating message to scale, reaching every student... middle of paper... active, eat better and grow healthy. With the first price increase for the National Lunch Program coming in 30 years, being a future parent, I would like to see ways to increase the price to improve the quality of the food we give our children while still keeping the meals low cost or free to children who may not have enough food. I think it would be a beneficial platform for any individual, parent, community or elected official to support. We can all encourage change. I was interested in examining how other countries structure their lunch programs and how much they cost schools and families compared to the United States. I will also continue to stay informed about the Farm to School program which provides mandatory funding for farm to school and horticulture programs. I love the idea of supporting locally and the community I live in.
