In the past, however, school uniform was a requirement only for private schools; the number of public schools requiring uniforms is growing rapidly (Brunsma). Every parent wants their children to feel safe while at school. This is just one of the many things that implementing school uniforms in public schools will do students good (Maxwell). School uniforms have also been shown to be a key resource in keeping gang colors and symbols out of schools (Maxwell). Mandatory uniforms also led to a decrease in violence and theft due to expensive clothes and shoes, helped instill a sense of discipline in students, reduced the number of distractions for students, and helped give students students a sense of community. (Maxwell). Uniforms have also helped blur the lines between rich and poor students, and have helped make it easier for school officials to identify people who don't belong (Maxwell). The implementation of school uniforms in public schools today will help reduce all these problematic situations and help students feel safe. A point of contention in the debate over school uniforms is cost. Many are quick to say no to uniforms because they would cost too much for parents. In response to this opposition, President Bush established tax breaks for school supplies, including uniforms (school uniforms). Many states have also stepped in to help reduce the cost of uniforms for parents by offering additional deductions (school uniforms). Additionally, some school districts offer uniform vouchers to low-income families (school uniforms).
