Topic > Organizational Socialization Tactics for Newcomer Staff...

IntroductionSocialization is a process in which a newcomer adapts the organizations behavior pattern to the surrounding culture and acquires the knowledge and attitudes necessary to become an effective member of an organization (Van Maanen and Schein, 1979) Organizational socialization for a new staff member is very essential since adaptation during the initial induction is generally considered to be the most intense and problematic phase and through the socialization process a new Once the newcomer gets in tune with the organization and adapts its environment, it becomes easier for the newcomer to learn organizational values, norms and resources. Organizations invest a good amount of money and resources in the recruitment and selection process (Bauer et al., 1998), quickly getting newcomers up to speed is important as they are hired to contribute. Previous research shows that there have been negative impacts of failure to socialize in an organization and its employees, organizations experience unmet expectations while negative behaviors and poor attitudes are found in newcomers without socialization while successful socialization results in attachment and organizational commitment, job satisfaction, socialization integration, role clarity, task mastery and value congruence (Wanous and Colella, 1989) Socialization methods of newcomer staff According to previous research both individual behavior and organizational actions are responsible for a effective socialization (Van Maanen and Schein, 1979). Therefore, the two methods of socialization are the socialization tactics offered by organizations and the socialization techniques used by newcomers themselves. Newcomers can be classified into two categories: graduate newcomers or experienced newcomers (Carr et al, 2006). Graduated in...... middle of paper......
